Lessons from “The Science of Getting Rich” (Part 2)

by Marelisa · Comments

The Science of Getting RichIn my last blog post, Lessons from “The Science of Getting Rich” (Part 1), I introduced some of the concepts developed by Wallace D. Wattles in his book, “The Science of Getting Rich”.  This is a continuation of that post.

Wattles explains in the third chapter of his book, “The Science of Getting Rich”, that everything you see on earth is made from one original substance-or formless stuff-out of which all things proceed. This original substance is the raw material of all things and it is alive with creative energy, constantly turning into different shapes, with new forms being made and others dissolving on a continuous basis.

As he explains in the preface of “The Science of Getting Rich”, this theory is the foundation of Oriental philosophies and has been making its way into the western world for the past few hundred years.

Everything that exists, from the planets to an oak tree, from mud huts to great works of art, is created from the original substance. In addition, this substance permeates all the space in, through, and between all the forms in the visible universe.

Throughout the book, Wattles refers to the “formless substance” in many different terms, such as: original substance; formless stuff; the universe; God; the Divine; the supreme power; the one living substance; creative energy; thinking stuff; and so on.

If all of this sounds a bit like “hocus pocus” to you, and it’s perfectly alright to be skeptical, you’ll be interested to know that this theory of the universe has received scientific validation, most notably, by the field of quantum physics.

Quantum Physics

The Science of Getting RichQuantum physics, a branch of science that was born in the early 20th century, is the study of the subatomic particles that make up the universe. Scientists-such as Max Planck, Albert Einstein, and Niels Bohr–discovered that these particles sometimes behave like matter and sometimes behave like energy waves.

While these microscopic particles are behaving like energy, they exist as probability. However, when they’re observed, they act like solid matter localized in time and space.

What we perceive to be hard matter is just condensed energy. Think of Albert Einstein’s famous formula: “E  = mc²”, or, energy equals mass multiplied by the speed of light squared.

This formula basically states that if you were to speed up the particles that make up matter-say, a pencil–to the velocity of the speed of light squared, it would turn into energy. Hence, matter is condensed energy. Everything in the universe is energy.

In “Ageless Body, Timeless Mind”, Deepak Chopra, M.D., writes the following:

“If you choose, you can experience yourself in a state of unity with everything you contact. In ordinary waking consciousness, you touch your finger to a rose and feel it as a solid, but in truth, one bundle of energy and information–your finger–is contacting another bundle of energy and information–the rose. Your finger and the thing it touches are both just minute outcroppings of the infinite field we call the universe.”

In my blog post, “Does Nirvana Reside in the Right-Side of the Brain?” I wrote about Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, a Harvard-trained brain scientist, who–as a result of having a stroke in the left hemisphere of her brain–was able to dislodge her awareness from a state of separation and identify instead with the unity of everything.

Bolte Taylor explains that, as she was having her stroke, she looked down at her arm and realized that she could no longer define the boundaries of her body. She could not define where she began and where she ended. The atoms and the molecules in her arm blended with the molecules and atoms in the wall, and all she could detect was energy.

She adds the following: “Everything is in motion, connected in a dance of grace. The brain is what imposes boundaries, and boundaries convey a perception of separation, but that’s a delusion. Everything is one.” (Source).

There is No Limit to this Energy

Wattles explains in “The Science of Getting Rich” that there is no limit to the supply of this energy or formless stuff; it is inexhaustible. Therefore, humanity, as a whole, is abundantly rich. There is enough formless substance for everyone on the planet to be able to live their lives to the fullest.

Furthermore, Wattles indicates that the formless stuff is intelligent. It is alive and is constantly producing more forms. It is the natural impulse of life to seek more life, and to seek to express itself more fully, and the original substance is always looking for ways to advance and increase life.

Wattles also explains that the formless supply is at the command of any man or woman who will act and think in “a certain way”. That is, the original substance is being shaped by each one of us.

You Create Your Reality With Your Thoughts

The Science of Getting RichThe first principle in the science of getting rich is that you create your reality with your thoughts. As we saw above, the raw material of all things is an intelligent, living, formless substance. Wattles goes on to explain that forms are created or impressed into this formless substance by thoughts. Everything that exists was first a thought which caused original substance to take the form of that thought.

A thought does not create instantaneous results, but, instead, it starts in motion the forces which will produce the material manifestation of that which has been thought about along established lines of growth.

Wattles offers the construction of a house as an example. The thought of constructing a house will not cause the instant formation of a house, but it will cause the turning of the energies working in trade and commerce to begin moving along the lines necessary for the construction of the house.

When a person has a thought, they hold an image of the thought in their mind. This image is communicated to the formless substance and begins to take shape in said substance, until it is manifested in material form. That is, a person causes the formation, or creation, of the thing they’re thinking about.

Therefore, doing things in “a certain way” which will create wealth begins by thinking in a certain way. More specifically, it begins by thinking about what you want in a sustained and continuous manner.

A magnet sends out vibrations that exert a force that will attract certain materials to it, such as iron and steel. If you place a nail near a magnet, it would be attracted to it. Magnetization occurs because the magnet causes particles called electrons in the atoms of the nail to align along the magnet’s lines of force.

Likewise, your thoughts create a force field of energy that radiates from you and attracts into your life the things that you’re thinking about. Every person who has become wealthy or successful has done so by holding the idea of wealth and success in their minds long enough and hard enough until they drew into their lives the resources they needed to accomplish it.

Because you create your reality with your thoughts, you have to master the ability to think only about those things which you want to manifest into your life. Do not let your mind wander to the negative or to what you don’t want, since that will cause the attraction of those things toward you.

It requires great effort to think about what you want when all appearances are to the contrary. For example, right now you may be broke, and the appearance of poverty will produce corresponding thoughts in your mind, such as all your unpaid bills, the car which has just been repossessed, and so on.

Regardless of appearances, you have to hold on to the truth that there is no poverty, only abundance. This requires great effort, but it is of vital importance that you do so. As stated before, if you’re constantly thinking about your unpaid bills and your empty driveway, these are the thoughts you will continue to impress into the formless substance.

The power necessary to think of abundance when surrounded by poverty, or to think of health when surrounded by disease, comes from grasping the following truths:

  • There is a thinking stuff from which all things are made.
  • A thought in this substance produces the thing that is imagined by the thought.
  • A person can impress their thoughts into the formless substance and cause the creation of the thing they are thinking about.

Thinking in A Certain Way

As Wattles explains in the eighth chapter of “The Science of Getting Rich”, the first step in the science of getting rich is to convey the idea of your wants to the formless substance. In other words, in order to get what you want you have to know what you want, and you have to communicate your wants to original substance by holding an image of what you want in your mind.

In addition, this mental image must be clear and specific, and not just some vague notion. It is not enough that you should have a desire for wealth in order “to do good” or a general desire to travel.

As an example, Wattles indicates that you would not send a letter to a friend filled with random words from the dictionary and let him construct the message for himself. You would send a coherent sentence which would communicate your message to your friend clearly. Likewise, when you try to impress your wants upon the thinking substance, remember that it must be done by a coherent statement.

As Wattles points out, “You must know what you want and be specific and definite. You can never get rich or start the creative power into action by sending out unformed longings and vague desires.” Decide what it is that you want and then set about to create the most complete and specific mental picture that you can.

Next, you need to remain focused on what you want. In “Simpleology, the Simple Science of Getting What You Want”, Mark Joyner explains that the Law of Focused Energy states that in order to accomplish something you must focus sufficient energy on it.  For purposes of getting rich, this means that you must have your mental picture continually in front of you. Dwell upon it often, always adding more and more detail to it.

Wattles admonishes that in order to get rich you must really want to get rich. In other words, strong desire is an important ingredient in the formula. The more you concentrate on what you want, and the more clearly you can see it in your mind, the more you will desire it. And the more that you desire it, the easier it will be to keep your mind fixed on the picture of what you want.

Napoleon Hill, famed author of “Think and Grow Rich”, had this to say about desire: “Truly, thoughts are things, and powerful things at that, when they are mixed with definiteness of purpose, persistence, and a burning desire for their translation into riches, or other material objects.”

When you’re thinking about what you want, you must do so with the intent to bring it into tangible expression. That is, you’re not just daydreaming, you’re establishing the foundations for what you intend to bring into your life. Your intention is an energy that you’re sending out into the universe, and the universe responds to this energy.

Another important element is faith: you must know that what you’re thinking about is already yours, and that it’s on its way. Take ownership of the thing you’re manifesting into your life, claim it as being already yours: mentally live in the house you’ve designed for yourself in your mind, wear the clothes you have pictured in your head, mentally drive the car you intend to bring into your life.

Be grateful now for all the things you intend to impress into the thoughtless form, as grateful as you expect to be when they actually take form. The quote below illustrates these principles:

“[I]f you want a sewing machine, hold a mental image of it with the most positive certainty that it is being made or is on its way to you. After once forming the thought, have the most absolute and unquestioning faith that the sewing machine is coming. Never think of it or speak of it in any other way than as being sure to arrive.”

When you’re asking for what you want, do not hesitate to ask largely; original substance wants you to have all that you can use for living the most abundant life you’re capable of living.

The original substance wants to live and enjoy things through humanity: it wants to play music, sing, travel, be beautifully clothed, enjoy comfortable surroundings, and savor luxurious foods, and the way it does so is through you. Therefore, your desire for more is in complete congruence with the urge of original substance for more complete expression.

To summarize, thinking “in a certain way” requires the following:

  • You must know what you want and form a clear and specific image of it in your mind.
  • You must remain focused on what you want and think about it often.
  • You must have strong desire for the things you wish to create.
  • You must have the intent to manifest what you’re thinking about.
  • You must have faith that what you’re asking for will be given to you.
  • You must claim what you’re asking for as already being yours.

In case you’re telling yourself “Ah, you see, it is hocus pocus; you just think about things in ‘a certain way’ and they eventually manifest in front of you”, in my next blog post I’ll explain how you also have to act in a certain way.

You’ll be interested to know that these are the same principles taught in “The Silva Life System”.

  • You know what, many people find it hard to accept the facts you have stated here. That's why few a rich. I have long been believed in the science of getting rich. It is said the things are created twice, first in the mind, then in reality. If we create something in our mind, and work for it, the universe will manifest it into reality. :-)

Hi Walter: For those who do find this hard to believe, at the very least knowing what you want and thinking about it often keeps you focused. How can you possibly get what you want in life if you don't know what it is? In addition, most people jump from one thing to the next and never give anything enough attention to really see it through to completion. But I agree with you: thought is the first building block of creation.
  • Ohh the old memories of chi kung resurfacing. I've been thinking of that as my next post, now I know it will be.

None of this brings hocus pocus to mind, but then again I've always had an esoteric side.

I was an avid Tuesday Lobsang Rampa reader when I was a kid, and translated a Taoist yoga guide as a student to make a few bucks (francs).

It's great to be back in that mood again :)

  • Hi Marelisa, great post. I think it's interested how you combined the first principle in the science of getting rich from Wallace D. Wattles, with the Law of Focused Energy from Simpleology from Mark Joyner, and Napoleon Hill's concept of desire into one post. I learned a lot from these experts of the mind.

I can see myself talking to large groups of people about work happiness. The more I picture this the easier it is to create the steps that make this come alive.

I love the depth of this post. Really has a lot of substance. Thank you!

Hi Tristan: I keep noticing that a lot of what I read says basically the same thing, but in a different way. I was just re-reading a blog I wrote last year on "6 Steps to Creating The Life You Really Want" and there I mention completely different authors but a lot of the messages are the same.

Hi Vered: I know you're a skeptic, but you'll see, I'll bring you around eventually. :-)
  • Hi Marelisa,

Quantum physics is something I've taken an interest in the last couple of years. This post reminded me I need to dig a little deeper. Although I have a bit of skepticism, what you've written here and what I've read elsewhere, makes me think....

I keep thinking, as I read this - about the book "As a Man Thinketh", by James Allen. What we think about, this is what we become....

Anyway, this seems to back up that idea, and it's one that I very much don't see as hocus pocus, instead as real and concrete.

Very good to read today, and I'm looking forward to the next part...

Hi Barbara: Since I started writing about this with my "As a Man Thinketh" post and now this series on "The Science of Getting Rich", I see similar information all over the place. I'm taking the 100 day challenge and there it is: "Your thoughts are creative, and they ultimately create your reality. So if you change your thinking, you will change your life."
  • Marelisa
Hi Lance: I just noticed that I've already written several posts that touch on this idea. I think that it's an important message that everyone needs to hear. It's great to know that you don't have to change the entire world, you just have to change your mind.

Hi Hilary: The posts will be here waiting for you when you're ready to read them. :-)
  • Many of these concepts can be found in the movie "The Secret," which I enjoyed greatly. However, my favorite part of this article is the section in which you explain matter and energy and how all things are basically composed of energy and are therefore connected. That can lead to all sorts of interesting possibilities. A fascinating scientist who studies human potential is Dean Radin. He's done some eye-opening work, and there are videos on YouTube that document his scientific findings with regards to telepathy and precognition (I kid you not!).

  • Hi Mare - this material is great, isn't it? I remember when I first heard the idea that thoughts are things and they go out and create our reality - straight away I thought it made sense. Now I'm off to read your latest installment.
