Hi Stacey (Shipman): Every day is indeed a new beginning. I love long hot showers too :-)

Hi Karl: Today I was walking to the gym and was upset at something that had happened earlier. I told myself to concentrate on looking around and noting things I could be grateful for and immediately my mood began to shift.

Hi Diana: There certainly are a lot of things to be grateful for, thank you for stopping by.

Hi Avatar: Life is made up of the small thing we often take for granted. If we stop to acknowledge them and think of how grateful we are we begin to see these small things in a new light.
  • There are too many things to be grateful to today and this post reminded me of some more things to be grateful too. It seems every small thing/matter can make us to feel good if we are grateful for it. :)

  • I've been working on being more grateful in my life. I was driving home this evening and getting mad at waiting at a light. It was a long day.

I exhaled and started looking for things to admire. I saw a young couple kissing in the car next to me. It was a little peck. Just perfect to change my perspective and see some beauty again.

  • There sure is a lot to be grateful for, and it's funny how once you start thinking about the things that you're thankful for, the list keeps growing and growing :)

  • Every day that I'm able to put my two feet on the ground is an opportunity to start over. For that I am grateful.

And while I love #43, long hot showers, my water bill does not!

Hi Robin: Yes, I forgot to add blogs :-) I live in a beautiful neighborhood too, and I can walk to my sister's apartment building in 5 minutes.

Hi Kelly: "This is nice, isn't it?" That's soooo cute :-) We don't celebrate Thanksgiving in Panama, but I might have turkey anyway (always looking for any excuse to have turkey).

Hi Barbara: I was hoping people would use it as a jump off point for their list of things they're grateful for this Thanksgiving :-)

Hi Jayne: I love lounging around reading the paper too! And you're very lucky to have be surrounded by beautiful gardens.

Hi Evelyn: I think every season offers things for us to be grateful for :-)

Hi MizFit: I see we have new word; thankfulgrateful :-)

Hi Elaine: Thank you, it took a while to put together but I think it was worth it.

  • You've covered a fair bit with this list!! I like the fact that you made it relevant for throughout the whole year! There is definitely lots to be grateful about. I'm in a state of thanks for all the things I enjoy in my life.

  • I'm not American but I really like the idea of a special day to give thanks. I wish we'd adopted that tradition in Australia instead of Halloween!

Not that being grateful should be confined to one day, of course. I often think about the things in my life for which I'm grateful - books, music, the internet, friends, the rain, being employed, healthy, happy and loved, a warm bed, food in my stomach, living next to beautiful gardens, and having plenty of time to myself to lounge on the couch and read the weekend papers.

  • Hi Marelisa - This is a great list to start with. It inspires us to find even more we can be grateful for. Can we ever say thank you enough?
  • Mare, I love the layout and categorization of this post - really distinctive. So many things on your list that make me smile. I especially love climbing into bed when it's raining and hearing its rat a tat tat on the window, and the smell of rain as well. Love it!

Right now I am grateful for being able to spend the day with my son. I love that he will play by himself in a make believe world for ages. I love that he sings and dances just for fun. I love that I get to win sometimes at snakes and ladders. I love the feel of squishy play dough between my fingers. And I love that when we are sat down together earlier and I had a lovely cup of tea, while he drank juice, he sighed and said, "This is nice, isn't it?" So polite and already such a gentleman.

Not sure if you celebrate thanksgiving in Panama, but have a great week either way.

    Kelly :)
  • Hi there Mare - what about being grateful for blogs? heheh

I'm grateful for the lovely suburb we live in and the fact that we can walk around it feeling happy and free. Thanks for a beautiful post!

Hi Davina: I just got a gift certificate from Amazon and I'm trying to decide what book or books to buy for myself :-) And I agree with you 100%, health is very important.
  • Hi Mare. I resonate to both of these ideas: Curling up in a comfortable chair by the fire while it’s snowing outside, reading a good book or magazine and having that cup of coffee with Bailey's and whipped cream. Mmm.

I wrote a list yesterday to start goal setting and reminding myself of what I was thankful for. I forgot to add health to it. I was reading it just before going to bed last night and quickly added it. Health is sooo important.

Hi DutchSchoolKid: I guess I'll have to go to the US or Europe this winter and get my own snow :-) Hot cocoa with tiny marshmallows, yes, yummmm.

Hi Vered: Thank you! A fluffy comforter is definitely something else to be grateful for (I put scented powder between my bed sheets so that it smells nice when I get in bed - "White Linen" by Estee Lauder).

Hi Mindful Mimi: Saturday I spend the afternoon with my one year old and my three year old nephews. I printed out Christmas coloring pages and found some YouTube videos with Christmas music and played it for them. They were so happy, and I had the best time with them. I'm very grateful for this Saturday.

Hi Natural: I think counting our blessings even when things are not "ideal" is one of the best ways to start moving toward where we want to be.
  • Mare
Hi Mark: I really enjoyed creating this list :-)

Hi Bamboo: We're at the end of the rainy season here in Panama and in the afternoon it rains almost every day. I've always loved rain too :-)

Hi Carla: A warm knitted scarf and a hot cup of green tea sounds heavenly. I'm glad you're in better health now :-)

Hi Stacey: Those Friday wrap up posts sound like a wonderful idea. Maybe I'll get a can of fake snow and spray it on my Christmas tree :-)
  • I'm grateful that I have a job when so many people don't...even if it's not the field where I want to be, there are those out there who would love to trade with me. I'm grateful for this tool in my toolbox that helps me get things done.

  • Every day when I get up I start listing the things I am grateful for. It usually starts with: being alive, my kids, my husband ...continues with running water and electricity when I hit the bathroom and then gets to the real stuff that make our days pretty. Such as snow and building a snowman with your 2,5 year old and seeing his utter joy and amazement at snow. Or letting go of the hand of your almost one year old and watching him take his first steps. And also just a good cup of green tea or a footrub by my hubby.
    Thanks for your list.

  • What a beautiful article.

"Climbing into bed when it’s raining outside; listening to the sound of the rain tapping against the window pane." - I have a little secret. In winter, every single night as I climb into my comfy bed and cover myself with the fluffy comforter, I say a little "thank you" inside my head. :)
  • Mare,
My snowballs can only hit heads, sorry!
Right now, I'm being grateful for #21, hmmm!

  • I am currently sitting by the window, watching snow fall, and feeling grateful. Starting in December, I will create weekly "celebrate your life" Friday wrap-up posts to encourage my readers to reflect on everything they have to be grateful for in their lives. This list is a perfect example of how blessed I am in this world.

  • Though I am at work, I am grateful for my hot cup of green tea. Though it’s chilly, I'm grateful for my hand knitted scarf that’s keeping me warm.

Reading this post is a great way to start the morning and a reminder for me to appreciate even the little things.

I was not in the best of health in my early 20’s and now that I’m approaching 30, I look and feel better than ever. I have never been so healthy in my life and I appreciate that so much.

  • I'm all for increasing awareness of what we can be grateful for, and you do a grand job with that cause.

"2. Climbing into bed when it’s raining outside; listening to the sound of the rain tapping against the window pane."

Where I live, it rains, like: never. I do miss the rain... In Florida, where I once lived, rain storms were magical and full of life.

Oh well, I'll focus on the other items on your list. :-)
  • Wow! What a list...reading the list brings a positive feeling to me....thank you fro sharing! :)

Hi Lance: You're so lucky, I miss building snowmen and having snow fights! I'm grateful for all of the friends that I've made this year on the blogosphere and, of course, you're on that list of friends Lance :-)

Hi Kim: I thought of giving up coffee once, but then I came to my senses: coffee is one of life's great pleasures :-)

TheDutchSchoolKid: Can you send a couple of snowballs over to Panama for me ? :-)

Hi Kathy: This year I just caught a very brief cold which didn't even make me stay in bed; I'm extremely grateful for my health too.

Hi Benjamin: It's very true, a lot of people just want more and more without being sure what "more" is. And it's like generosity: if you're not generous when you have a little, you won't be generous when you have a lot. I'll probably be going to the beach this weekend (not that I'm rubbing it in or anything :-) ).

Ru4real: I guess it's a lesson that you never know how much time you have left, so stop to take pleasure in the little things now.
  • Last week another blogging friend told about a young mother in her church who had been having a health problem and had seen a doctor twice, but suddenly died in the middle of the night. I feel so sorry for that young family ... but it has made me VERY thankful to have my family and to have good health.
  • You know Mare, that opening quote by Charles Haddon Spurgeon is absolutely true. In today's society, we always seem to want a little more... just a bit. What we don't realize is that if we are not thankful for the things we have now and if we don't remember where we came from there is no way to know where we are going and when we have finally arrived. How can we possibly be thankful for getting there if we don't know we arrived? It is a self fulfilling prophesy.

With that said, very good list above. I know for sure my list includes more sun, sand, salt air, and less snow and sleds, but I definitely don't fault a person for including it in their list!

  • Lately, I've been hearing about a LOT of people I know who are in failing health - so this morning as I took my morning walk, I was truly RELISHING the movement of my muscles and really giving thanks that I'm healthy. I can see - I can hear - I can move- I can breathe. It's so easy to take those things for granted and I'm trying hard not to today!

  • I was just having a cup of coffee and was thinking that there is nothing like the first cup of the day. I'm glad that is #22 :-)

It's so important to take notice of the simple things all around us. My daughter has helped me do that. Instead of being annoyed when we have to walk in the rain she gets me all excited to jump in puddles.

  • Well, I don't think you can't read this list and not feel grateful for something in your life! This is really a feel-good, great way to start the day message!

And...I awoke this morning to our first measurable snowfall - it looks so serene out there this morning - a light, white snow covering the ground, and landing on the evergreens! And, while I watch the snow coming down - I'm enjoying a steaming cup of coffee to start the day. Later this afternoon - the serene look of the snow will surely turn to snowball fights and snowmen!

I'm thankful for much this year: I'm thankful for warmth on cold winter days. I'm thankful for fresh fruit every day. And, I'm thankful for the many wonderful friends and family members in my life - including you!
