A while back I came across a free report written by Stuart Goldsmith called “How to Double Your Way to a Million Dollars”.
The basic premise is this:
- You have to find a penny lying on the ground (yes, it has to be a “found” penny).
- You then find a way to turn that penny into two cents, probably by telling someone that you’re conducting an experiment and asking them to give you a penny, or by finding another penny on the ground.
- Then you take those two cents and find a way to double it and turn it into four cents.
- Next, you find a way to double the four cents and turn it into eight cents.
- You get the picture: you then take the eight cents and you double it to get sixteen cents, and so on.
- If you continue to do this–doubling the amount that you have at each step–, by the time you’ve done it 28 times you’ll have made a million dollars (go ahead and map it out on a piece of paper). Although the numbers start out small at first, they grow exponentially so that by step 28 you’ll have over a million dollars.
At each step you have to put your creativity to the test in order to double the amount that you’re holding at that moment. In addition, this method teaches you the power of breaking tasks down into small chunks and, since you don’t put in a cent of your own money, you’ll also be more willing to take risks. The report is short and pretty much self-explanatory, do a Google search for it if you’d like to download it.
For the first few steps you’ll probably have to either ask people for the money or simply find more pennies, nickels, dimes, and so on lying on the ground. You can also get over the initial hump by doing the following:
- Create a Squidoo Lens by clicking here. Users who create lenses are called lensmasters, and squidoo gives 50% of its advertising revenue to lensmasters. In addition to getting a cut of the advertising profits from squidoo, you can monetize your lens by adding an Amazon module, an e-bay module, and so on. You can also add your own affiliate links to your squidoo lenses.
- Create a free blog on www.blogger.com and join the Amazon Associates Program and/or add Google Adsense.
- If you’re not a freelance writer you can find a couple of freelancing gigs to add some money to the pot (if you’re a freelance writer you can’t add money from your freelancing work to the pot because the idea is to find ways apart from your regular source of income to double your money).
Apply Creativity Techniques to Find Ways to Double Your Money
By the time you get to step 15 and have $80.00, you can really start applying creativity techniques to ask yourself: “How can I turn these $80.00 into $160.00″? Three of the creativity techniques you can apply are the following:
- Choose a word at random–you can find a random word generator by clicking here and then use that word as a jumping off point to generate ideas on ways to double the money. Remember, the key to having high quality ideas is to have a high quantity of ideas.
- In my blog post “Three Incredibly Effective Creativity Techniques” I explained that RoleStorming and Superheroes are two variations of the brainstorming technique. Basically, you take on a different identity, it can be an invented persona or someone you know and generate ideas by taking on that person’s identity (for example, “What would Donald Trump do?”). You can also pretend to be a fictional superheroe–such as Superman, Spiderman, the Incredible Hulk, Wonder Woman, and so on–and use their ‘super’ characteristics to trigger ideas.
- Apply “the Idea Lottery”.
Use Emotional Freedom Techniques to Release Negative Beliefs About Money
Your goal at the end of this process is to have a million dollars. Often, people form the intent to achieve wealth, they set well-defined financial goals for themselves, and then they go about taking the necessary steps to reach those goals–in this case, doubling the amount you have step by step. However, they soon sabotage themselves in their attempts by the beliefs they hold in their subconscious about money.
If you set the goal of having a million dollars while holding the belief that you don’t deserve wealth, or that you’re not smart enough to be wealthy, or that having a lot of money isn’t spiritual, it’s very likely that you won’t allow yourself to make a million dollars. It’s like trying to cultivate a garden which is run over by weeds, or trying to keep a plant healthy when it’s infested with bugs. Some of the negative beliefs you may have about wealth are the following:
- If I’m financially successful, I won’t know how to handle the money.
- You have to be born with money to be wealthy.
- Money is the root of all evil.
- People won’t like me if I’m wealthy.
- My friends and family will reject me if I’m wealthy.
- If I’m rich, someone else will have to be poor.
- Spiritual people don’t care about money.
- You have to work too hard to be wealthy.
- In order to be wealthy you have to work all the time and sacrifice your health, your family, and your leisure activities.
- Financial success isn’t worth the price.
- You need money to make money.
- In order to be wealthy you have to lie, cheat, and steal.
- Wealthy people are selfish and shallow and don’t care about others.
- I’m a failure.
- I’ll never amount to anything.
- I’ll never be successful.
- I can’t get what I want.
- I’m never sure if I’m doing things in the right way.
- I’m not smart enough to be wealthy.
- I don’t deserve to be happy or successful.
- I need to be rescued.
- I’m not disciplined enough to be wealthy.
In my blog post “Four Ways to Achieve a Productive State of Mind” I discussed the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and listed several free resources where you can learn how to apply this technique. Use EFT in order to clear out any negative beliefs that you have about money so that your subconscious beliefs don’t get in the way of you achieving your goal of reaching the one million dollar target.
Conclusion
If you decide to try out this method make sure that you keep a journal where you record what you did to double your money at each step and how long it took you to do so. The first 14 steps should go by fast (by the time you get to $80.00 you’ll have completed step 14), but then as the numbers get bigger it takes longer to get to the next step. So, who’s game?

Marelisa,
Thanks for the great post. The concept is awesome, but I think I would have a hard time putting it into effect in my life. It does not seem practical. I have a hard enough time getting by with my main source of income, it would be hard not to have that extra savings go to things that are necessary.
I agree with the whole attitude toward money part. Believing that you will not ever be wealthy or that you don’t deserve to be wealthy will keep you right where you are.
What point are you at so far with your doubling? Good luck with it!

There are many ways to make money online. But to make the productivity optimized we need to follow our own creative steps. This will surely make some difference from the other usual money makers.
I’m at $320.00 right now, keep it all in my shoebox, so tempting right now to spend it, but no, its an investment!!! wish me luck!
@Mark – you should put it in a savings account!
This seems like a really good idea. Its simple (to start) and seems fun. I’m going to start tomorrow; I have nothing to lose!

Hi Marelisa – that’s a fun exercise. I really like the way you have gone into how people can turn around their sabotaging beliefs about having money – no point in trying to make lots if you don’t really want it underneath!

Hi Jack: I can see how it would be tempting for you to dip into the stake, you can play later on when you’re ready to do so
I’ve cheated a little bit but I’m going to say that I’m at step 15 (I have $128.05) and from this point on I will stick to the rules.
Hi Make Money Online: Our own creativity can help us go down a different route than everyone else.
Hi Mark: You’re on step 17, excellent! Best of luck
Hi Carla: It is fun. During the first few steps I spent a lot of time staring at the ground hoping to find loose change
Hi Robin: I really think we find ways to sabotage ourselves if our beliefs are not aligned with what we’re trying to accomplish.
Ok…printing this one out. Must read a few times. Have a fantastic weekend!

I have heard of the penny rule before, I think too it has to do with urgency. If someone told us that we needed 10,000 by next Friday and we didn’t have a dime today to save our life, we would get so creative in ways to come up with the money. No different in real life, we just don’t put the same effort or urgency into it. Many people who came from nothing found wealth because they had passion..not for money alone, but a passion for what they were doing. So the quickest way to wealth IMHO is to do work that we love. It’s easy to get creative then. Loved the post Mare.
While I don’t see myself trying to actualy do this, I love it as a theory and as an idea. I also like the idea that creativity can help us make money.
Hi Mare – what a fantastic idea. I’m joining in. I didn’t realise there were so few steps between a penny and a million dollars. It makes it sound a whole lot easier to achieve.
I like the idea of pretending to be someone else to come up with ideas.
“it’s very likely that you won’t allow yourself to make a million dollars. It’s like trying to cultivate a garden which is run over by weeds, or trying to keep a plant healthy when it’s infested with bugs.”
This is a very good point. How much of our failures in life are due to something in us, whether on the surface or hidden deep behind the curtains of our subconscious that lead us to falling short?
It’s a very serious question.

Hi Natural: I agree that a sense of urgency is a great motivator to getting what you want. Sometimes when we’re at ease we just don’t see a reason to push beyond our comfort zone.
Hi Vered: Creative people have a leg up even when it comes to making money
Hi Cath: Great! Let’s see which one of us makes to a million first
Hi Bamboo: I think that whether we succeed or fail, it’s up to us.
I’m tempted to do this Mare…
Reminds me in a way of my wife. She always has her eyes peeled to the ground – and will pick up any money – a penny, a nickel, etc. Me, I tend to skip over it. Maybe she has the right idea here – it only takes a penny and a bit of creativity!
Lances last blog post..The Soundtrack of Our Lives
Hi Marelisa. I like the philosophy of this. Ok, so you might laugh at this…. I thought I’d be the smart one and my less than mathematically inclined mind thought, “Oh, I’ll just go halfway and put the rest in the bank to collect interest.” Sigh, but when I mapped it out I realized that halfway will only get you around $80, not $500,000. Drat!
As I was thinking about why I was resisting doing any of this I realized something. All I really want is to be happy. I think a lot of people think that money will do this. That is my clouded judgment getting in the way.
Davinas last blog post..A Ghostly Life Experience
Hi Lance: I’m always picking up pennies too. I don’t care if it has mud on it, I feel like it’s money that’s falling from the sky
Come on, play along
Hi Davina: Yeah, the numbers get a lot bigger at the end. I agree that money doesn’t buy happiness, and in fact studies show that after our basic needs are met more money has only a trivial impact on our happiness. But if we do the other things we need to do to be happy, such as working toward achieving meaningful goals, and we have money, then we’re golden
Believing that you are worthy of wealth is huge. It’s one thing to feel that you are entitled to it because everyone is entitled to a life free of financial stress. But when you actually feel worthy of financial freedom you have taken ownership of it.

Hi Kathy: I think that we all need to “know” that if provide value to others we deserve to be wealthy.
Hi Daniel: Squidoo can get you traffic to your blog, it can help you organize material for writing articles for your blog, the lenses are fun to build, and you make some money which can apply toward achieving a larger goal.
What a creative and productive project! I’ve printed out the report to read in depth and will also read the other links in this very “rich” post. Thanks, Marelisa.
I also noticed pennies were laying on the floor of his room when we moved him into his college room this year. I finally asked him about them b/c it seemed strange to me. His reply is that they aren’t worth anything any longer and they’re going to stop minting them in the not-too-distant future. I disagreed and said that all of those pennies add up to dollars, etc. (I know I sound like an old lady now!)
And speaking of pennies . . . I noticed last summer when my son was home from college that I’d find pennies on the floor of his room . I would keep picking them up and putting them either in the pile of change on his dresser, or in my pocket.
I am going to send him this post to show him where one penny could take him.
And when he’s home over Thanksgiving week, I’ll know where to look for my first penny — the floor of his room!

Stacey / Create a Balances last blog post..Is That a Pumpkin in Your Belly or are You Just Happy to See Me?
I’ve never heard of this report before, but it certainly is creative! And I like the whole idea of showcasing the minute steps it takes to achieve a big goal. I tend to be very big picture and I do find it challenging to break down my goal into smaller, more manageable steps so I think the idea of doubling smaller amounts until you get to larger amounts is a good one.
Personally I often focus on attracting what I need rather than the money to buy things and I find that works very well for me. I have asked for and received computers, printers, makeup, clothes, free labour, free therapy, furniture and yes, even cash. Sometimes these items come from friends, neighbours, kind strangers, work, the government, and all sorts of unexpected sources.
I met a guy just last week who is house sitting next door to my friend who lives in a very exclusive part of Sydney. he was staying in this apartment with water views, driving a Lexus and somehow surviving even though he had just got back from 6 months in an Indian Ashram. Within a week of returning home he managed to attract all these resources to live quite comfortably while he looked for a job. It was quite amazing. So I guess creativity and being free and open to accepting abundance can lead you anywhere in life.

Hi Linda: I pick pennies of the street so if you’d like you can send me some of the pennies you find on the floor of your son’s room
I bought the Thesis theme for my site with the money I had from step 15, hopefully it will make my site stickier. Let’s see
Hi Mitch: “Creativity Lady”, I like that
Hi Stacey: That’s a great approach! And if as an aside you make a million dollars, well then that’s just an added benefit of having found ways to be more creative
Hi Kelly: I have a tendency to try to go from A to Z. Learning how to break things into small steps is also something I’m teaching myself to do. You’re right that at the end of the day what we want is not money, but the things and experiences that money can buy.
I started this on the 4/14/09. I went looking for a penny. I found 5cents. The next dayI doubled it to 10cents by giving the 5cents to my brother who gave me 10cents. My brother used this method a year ago and net 1.2 million dollars. He now has $,8000 on his second cycle starting from nothing.
Hi Tassel: Wow, your brother has done great with this method! I hope it works for you too
Guess what.
I found 5 cents on Sunday. Today I found 31cents.
I am doubling 5cents instead of 1 cents. I spoke with my brother this evening and he is very excited for me. It took him two years to reach his million . He said he thought it would have taken him 10 years.
He used the money to pay off his 30 years morgage and to purchase two three story appartments all rented out in New York.
This system works.
Hi Tassel: I find a penny on the ground every day, practically without fail, but it sounds like you’re finding a lot of money on the ground. I see your brother is following Robert Kiyosaki’s method of earning passive income through real estate
Here is another way that I am building $6,000,000
It cost me one time $129.
Already I have tripled my money.
I am now aiming to make the 6million dollars in 20 steps.

I am looking for just three person who will begin this journey with me.
