Morning Ritual: A Buffet

by Marelisa · Comments

morning ritualA ritual is a set of actions performed in a predetermined order and manner, often thought to have symbolic value. Rituals are predictable and they give our lives order and structure. In addition, well thought out rituals can help us ingrain positive habits and systemize the actions which will help us lead our best life.  Having a morning ritual can help us create a beneficial start to our day. Below you will find a buffet of morning activities from which you can pick and choose in order to create a morning ritual that works for you.

Get Enough Sleep.  A great morning begins with getting adequate sleep the night before.  Therefore, a prerequisite to planning an effective morning ritual is to take the necessary steps to get the sleep you need to function optimally. If you’re not satisfied with the quality of your sleep, read my post Sleep Extravaganza: 40 Tools, Tidbits, & Resources to Help You Conquer Sleep for ideas and recommendations. As a general rule of thumb you should go to sleep when you’re tired and wake up at roughly the same time every morning.

Don’t Hit the Snooze Button. Some people suggest that as soon as you wake up in the morning you jump out of bed as if someone had thrown a bucket of cold water on you. While that’s certainly one approach, another suggestion is that you wake up gently by giving yourself a massage as soon as you wake up. Experts do agree on the fact that should wake up as soon as the alarm goes off and refrain from having a wrestling match with the snooze button.

Get Some Light. Draw back the curtains, open the windows, and turn on the lights. Go outside if you can and turn your face toward the sun.  Light will trigger your natural circadian rhythm and help get your mind going

Breakfast Of Champions. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day since it’s the first time you’ll be eating anything for a long period of time. In addition, it’s an important source of energy for your body and will give you the fuel necessary to carry out your morning activities. Healthy breakfast foods, like eggs, fruit, or bran cereal are a good source of many of the vitamins and minerals a person needs during the day. A lot of people also enjoy fruit smoothies, such as a Peanut Butter and Banana Smoothie; consider adding whey protein powder to your fruit smoothie.

Coffee or Tea. You also have your choice between coffee–French Vanilla coffee, espresso, cappuccino, and so on–, and tea.  Those who prefer tea have a wide array to choose from, including green tea, Early Grey Tea (black tea), and white tea, among others. Many people also enjoy drinking orange juice with their breakfast.

Meditation Practice. The morning hours are the perfect time to spend ten or fifteen minutes in silent contemplation. You can meditate, do breathing exercises, write in a journal, practice Tai Chi or QiGong, or practice yoga. In addition, sitting outside on the porch quietly with a cup of coffee can also be considered a form of meditation. Another option is taking a few minutes to read something inspirational or silently repeating to yourself a list of positive affirmations.

Exercise. If you exercise first thing in the morning you’ll be able to shake off any remaining sleepiness and you’ll get your metabolism going early in the day.  In addition, it allows you to check off “exercise” on your to-do list first thing in the morning.  Take your dog for a walk or step on the treadmill and jog for forty minutes. You can also go for a bike ride or for a nice, long swim. Consider doing push ups and abdominals, and remember to stretch.

Go Over Your Life Vision, Your Goals, and Your To Do List. When planning your day you need to start with the big picture in mind: you should have a written statement of what your ideal or ultimate life looks like.  You should also have milestones or long-term, mid-term, and short-term goals that will allow you to move toward creating that ideal life. In addition, your short-term goals should be broken up into the smallest chunks you can think of and those small chunks should be scheduled into your day planner.

In the morning, review your vision for your ideal life, your milestones, and the schedule you have prepared for that day.  Visualize yourself living your ideal life, achieving each of your goals, and going through your day successfully completing each item on your schedule.

Get in Touch with the World. Read the newspaper, scan the CNN website for the news of the day, or watch the news on television. You can even finish off reading the newspaper by going through the funnies and doing the crossword puzzle.

Music. Do you enjoy listening to music in the morning?  Maybe you like to start your day by dancing around the room in your underwear with the music blaring.  Instead of music, you can listen to an audio book or a podcast.

Take Vitamins. Taking a multivitamin in the morning is one way to ensure your body is getting all of the nutrients it needs.

Weigh In. A lot of people consider weighing themselves once a week to be sufficient. Those who struggle with their weight may prefer to weigh themselves every day so that they can take corrective action quickly in case the pounds are starting to creep up.

Grooming.  Jump in the shower, brush your teeth, shave (men), apply body and face creams, fix your hair, apply make-up (ladies), and get dressed.  You’re all set!

  • Hi Marelisa,

I do agree, morning rituals can make or break our day, and I so dislike when mine gets messed up. I know I function best with a good nights rest, so that's a high priority on my list.

My favorite thing to do is to read my blog comments as I drink my coffee. It's always a joy to see what my cyberfriends have to say.

  • hey there marelisa, rituals are a good way to start, in fact when something goes wrong or out of order, i guess i freak out. my morning seems agitated. i have my coffee, i read my email, stop by some blogs, watch the news...this relaxes me and when i get out of the house on time, i'm less stressed.

i only hit snooze twice this morning. ;) actually i set my alarm clock with snooze time included. by the time i do get up, it's the time i wanted to get up anyway.
  • Morning rituals are something that I've never been good at, although I'm always attempting them. I don't so much hit snooze as purposely set my alarm clock an hour before I have to get up - only so I can reset it and sleep some more!

My wife and I are moving in between states and the process has disrupted my habits more than a little (we had to live apart for a few months while our house was sold). Now that things will return to normal soon, I'm hoping to incorporate some of these aspects into my morning routine.

    Great post!
  • Thanks for linking to my smoothie recipe.

I've heard a lot of people say not to hit the snooze, but for me it works. I set my alarm to go off earlier than I need to get up, then hit the snooze. Even though I'm getting up on time the act of hitting the snooze makes me feel like I've been able to sleep in a little. It's a little mental trick I play on myself that works to feel more rested.

  • The snooze button is so tempting! But you figure that if you routinely snooze, you should just set your alarm for the later time and stop pretending that you're going to get up earlier.

@Barbara: I read my comments as I drink coffee and have breakfast as well.

@Natural: Apparently a lot of people hit the snooze button (see Summer's comment) :-)

@John: It's difficult to keep to healthy habits while you're moving. The biggest habit I want to incorporate into my life right now is becoming an early riser.

@Summer: I have milk, bananas, and honey at home, but I don't have peanut butter, so I'm going to have to wait until tomorrow to try your smoothie recipe. It sounds delicious!

@Hunter: I think if you hit the snooze button it's a symptom of the fact that you're not getting enough quality step, and you should take steps to fix that. But apparently some people have actually incorporated "hit the snooze button" into their morning ritual.
  • @Hunter : Snooze is not used to pretend we are getting up early. It's used to feel as if we slept more ;) hehe - as Summer as rightly shared.

I am curious - does any one follow the "eat the frog" in morning routine - that is immediately start with the most important, most hated and difficult task in morning. I feel like going back to sleep just thinking of starting with something I don't like in morning. How do people tackle that?

  • Hi Mare - thank you for the link love :) .

Totally agree with the snooze button. I find that my best mornings are when I don't hit the snooze button.

I'm wondering where spirituality would fit in? This could be part of meditating, or could be a separate activity such as a morning prayer or a morning read from a book relating to spirituality.

Not everyone is spiritual, but for those that are, I think having an explicit morning routine dedicated to that is good.

  • When I drink tea in the morning, which is a ritual, I often like to contemplate my life; the things I want to conquer and so forth.

The morning is a good time for introspection, and quiet contemplation.
  • Get Enough Sleep - lately no. We are working very hard on our blogs, and we haven't found the right routine yet. We'll figure it out. Soon, I hope, because I need my sleep!
Don’t Hit the Snooze Button - actually, we do, but for a good reason. We set the alarm for 5 a.m. and then always snuggle for another 30 minutes of precious sleep. Snuggling is a great way to start the morning.
Get Some Light - yup, the Lion throws open the shutters.
Breakfast Of Champions - definitely! Can't start my day without food. Smoothies make me gag though. I've never been able to eat/drink them.
Coffee or Tea - espresso from fresh roasted beans (got the Lion a green bean coffee roaster for his birthday)
Meditation Practice - we get up early so we don't have to rush. That's our meditation.
Exercise - would love to run in the morning, but I'd have to get up at 4 a.m.! So not going to happen!
Go Over Your Life Vision, Your Goals, and Your To Do List - the Lion and I discuss our day, week, life, on the 30 minute drive into work.

@Avani: I see the morning ritual as something that goes before you actually start on your to-do list. But as far as eating the frog goes, I eat the frog at about 10:30 a.m. That way, I get to start the day off on a positive note, and at the same time I don't have to spend the whole day thinking about it. That's just what works for me, although thankfully I don't have to eat too many frogs.

@Al: I see spirituality as fitting into the "meditation practice". When I meditate I ask for what I want, which to me is a form of prayer. Then at night I write in my gratitude journal (because prayer is both asking for things and giving thanks).

@Vered: I've become a lot healthier when it comes to eating breakfast. I used to have coffee and a danish or donut for breakfast. Now I have whole wheat toast with peanut butter, fruit, coffee, and orange juice. I want to start having smoothies though, I'm looking for good recipes.

@Bamboo: My ritual involves coffee instead of tea. I meditate for my contemplation time, but I can see how having a tea ceremony ritual (I've seen you call it a ceremony before) is conducive to introspection.
  • Mare
@Urban Panther: Sounds like you have a great morning ritual. Where do you get fresh roasted coffee? I was reading on another blog that coffee is no longer fresh two weeks after it's been roasted and that supermarkets and most coffee houses carry coffee that was roasted more than two weeks before.
  • I can appreciate a good morning routine. I had one when I worked. Would rise at 5, do yoga and have a good breakfast. I hated jumping of bed, into the shower and rushing off to work.

  • I'm so glad you included music! It's amazing how much an upbeat song can set my mood for the entire day. Of course, I try to keep the power of music working for me by not overdoing it. On the days when I do take the time to turn up the tunes, I end up really listening, not just letting it fade into the background.

Breakfast, sunlight, and a stroll through the yard to see what's blooming are my other favorites.

[sorry for the link. I just think it's funny.]

On a serious note, I've been challenging to wake up earlier and earlier each day. So far so good. I've been making progress... Some good music (something like Cirque du Soleil) and coffee usually get me going (though I'm trying to cut back on the coffee too). I shower, check my e-mails (but only once) and it's off to start the day...
  • This is a good menu of rituals to choose from. For me, it's a "breakfast" of brown rice, then jogging, which I've started using as replacement for hitting Starbucks.

Brown rice is a complex carbohydrate rich in fiber, so you get a slow, steady supply of glucose in the bloodstream as the grain metabolizes (unlike breads, or other simple carbs), giving you sustained energy for hours. When I drank coffee, I always added sugar, which gave me a sharp spike of energy for about an hour, followed by a mild lethargy. I'll probably add miso soup to the morning ritual for its detoxification effect.

I agree with the advice about getting some light. I actually sleep with the blinds open and wake up by sunlight. The sun is much more user friendly than any alarm clock.
  • Mare
@Sara: I've been late to more meetings than I care to admit because instead of getting ready I was dancing in front of the mirror :-) I also go look at my plants in the morning, although they're on a window sill since I live in an apartment. I want a yard.
  • Mare
@Ricardo: I visited the link you provided but couldn't find what you're referring to (oh well). I'm going to become an early riser even it's the last thing I do!

@Andre: Brown rice, huh? I open the windows when I get up. My apartment looks over the bay of Panama so I have a great view.
  • exersise, light, feeling rested, delicious breakfasts-- i love the morning for all these reasons. going over one's vision and to-do list is a wonderful tip; i must remember that. might i add that we should set that alarm early enough so that we don't have to be rushed? morning is a wonderful experience if one is not dashing to get out the door.

Hi Neimanmarxist: I completely agree it's very important not to feel rushed in the morning :-)
  • My life is all about rituals; I couldn't survive without them. I can check off everything on your list, except number one (maybe next year) and music. I really, really miss listening to music. Ever since I've started writing, I've been listening to audio books (when I have time to listen to anything) because I want to hear the rhythm of language. When I'm driving, at least over the last year, I just want silence.

    @Writer Dad:

I'm actually in the process of perfecting my rituals right now. For example, I go to the gym every single day Monday to Friday at 11:00 a.m., but I want to start jogging early in the morning.

I live in Panama, so other than when I watch television (cable)I don't get to listen to English being spoken very often. I like your idea of listening to audio books to hear the rhythm of the language.
  • Well, I don't think I'll ever replace coffee with jogging, but I do usually get up early to exercise and it gets my day off on the right foot.

I don't always have time to indulge in other morning rituals - like leisurely coffee while browsing the internet or reading the paper - but if my daughter sleeps in, I do take the time.

On the weekends my dear husband makes breakfast, and in winter we have breakfast in bed, in summer we eat on the patio and this is one of my very favorite family rituals!

A nice variety of morning tips, Mare.

I used to skip breakfast, thinking that I could manage on an empty stomach all day. How wrong I was!

The best thing I did was to consciously decide to have a nutritious, filling breakfast each morning of cereal, followed by fruit juice or a smoothie.

Now, this healthy eating routine fires me up for an energetic day.

The old saying still holds true: "Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper."
  • Mare
@Scott: I tend to have breakfast like a king, lunch like a king, dinner like a king, and even snack like a king. I'm starting to cut down though. Thank goodness I love exercising :-)
  • Interestingly enough, you will find the answer to your question in both the Lion's (read his first) and my post of today *grin*

I was just over at your blog reading both your post and Urban Lion's. Now I want a coffee bean roaster!
  • Back in the days when I had my own business and worked from home, I would wake up at 5 am and start work at 6:30. I spent that time slowly waking up and watching the world wake up around me. I really enjoy taking a walk around the garden sipping my espresso or waking up on the bay anchored off someplace quiet. I really like my mornings too.....

Urbane Lions last blog post..Whose gift is it anyway?
  • Mare
@Urbane Lion: A couple of years ago my father chartered a small yacht and we spent about 10 days sailing around the coast of Venezuela (we were passengers, the yacht had a three-person crew). I loved it! Waking up anchored at sea (albeit close to shore) is awesome.
  • Coffee and vitamins are definitely part of my morning ritual, along with feeding my animal friends. However, I'm a sucker for snooze ;) Guess I have to work on that one!
  • Mare
@Melissa: The only animal I have is a fish (if a fish can be called an animal). I feed him around 2:00 p.m. each day. I guess it's because the first time I brought him home about three months ago I fed him as soon as I put him into his bowl and it was in the afternoon. Maybe I'll change "feed the fish" to part of my morning ritual.
  • Pre-kids I always liked to live my life quite spontaneously, but I have always had rituals for certain parts of the week and day. Now I have a child, rituals are even more important. One, because routine is the friend of everyone with young children, and two, because I think family rituals are very bonding.

My son and I always start the day with a cuddle on the sofa watching a little kids cartoons. I drink coffee and he munches on a banana. We also do 3 books before bed and have a particular thing we say as we tuck him in. I think these things provide a sense of love and security to him.

As for myself. I really have benefited from the morning exercise routine. It makes you feel so much better about yourself for the rest of the day. Though now it's winter and I am SO COLD I am finding it more challenging to drag myself outside for a run. And the not hitting the snooze button - I agree, but I can't do it. I love my bed and I ahte getting up!

  • Mare
@Kelly: I'm sure it means a lot to your little boy that you sit with him every morning and watch cartoons.

Do you know that there's an alarm that jumps off the nightstand and rolls around the room beeping loudly so that you actually have to get up and run after it to turn it off? There's another one that "explodes" (makes an incredibly loud noise) unless you cut the right wire (press either the red, green, or blue button, depending on the color of the light that is flashing on and off, which varies randomly day by day; that way you have to wake up enough to determine which button to push). So as you can see, there are products directed especially toward people who keep pushing the snooze button :-)
  • A full morning ritual is still something I need to work on. Coffee first thing is a definite must! Other than that, my dog usually finishes waking me up :) -- Oh, and thank you for your post on getting some sleep. I'm a chronic insomniac, so God knows I needed some help!

  • Morning rituals are the key to having a great day. I start mine by listening and singing along to Christian music. Thank you for this post.
